The first morning rounds went well. The team had just arrived
and spent a hard day putting things together, so congratulations
on getting it all together so quickly. There were a few difficulties
which were handled or tolerated, especially the generator which
made the audio difficult. However, we were able to get a passable
video on the Yale side.
Most important, the team is all in good health. They looked well,
and did not seem to be as short of breath as the team did last
year. Of course, they all have a dry hacking cough, from the blowing
dust, dry air, etc. Their spirits seemed good.
On the trek up to base camp, a large amount of data was acquired.
Gary Stillwell, a medical student from Temple Medical School,
is fully dedicated to the data collection, processing and archiving
on this side. We discussed the transmission of data, Gary showed
the Yale team the first set of data from the PED vital signs monitor.
Technical questions were raised about wattage, transmission distance,
etc, as well as sequencing of repeaters. These will be passed
on to Tom Blackadar, and we will respond in the morning. All the
scientific equipment is working except for one of the i-STAT devices,
however the primary i-STAT is working fine. They have not unpacked
the Cytometrics or Olympus microscopes yet
There is some question about the receipt of data and other information,
however real-time exploration of the website answered the questions.
Over the next few days all these can easily be resolved. Corey
will be doing twice daily updates on the website. We received
a large number of pictures again today, as well as a great story
from Scott of the last 3 days trek to the base camp.
Drs. Jim Brink and Louise Scout of the radiology department talked
with Chris Macedonia about the ultrasound images (2 sets) which
we have already received and reviewed.
At the end of the morning rounds, there was a special Mother's
Day wish from Rick Jr. to his Mom, Judy Satava, who attended the
conference.
Participants (in addition to those mentioned above) were Peter
Angood, moderating, Doris Farquhar, Spyros Condos, Gary Stilwell,
as well as Dimitri and Norman, who did a great job on insuring
the technical side worked well. Considering this was the first
transmission this year, it went exceptionally well - of course
there were the glitches, but none that will not be corrected over
the next few days as we get more experience.
