Morning rounds were highlighted by the participation of Dr.
Bruce Shields, Chairman of Yale's Ophthalmology Department. From
the Yale site, Dr. Shields reviewed the retinal images transmitted
from base camp while E3's Ophthalmologist Dr. Jennifer Grin presented
the case of the team member who had complained of a decrease in
color vision. Dr. Shields concurred with Dr. Grin's assessment
of retinal hemorrhage and with her advice that the patient refrain
from ascending above the base camp's elevation of 17,500 feet.
Dr. Chris Macedonia, E3's Director of Medical Research, reported
that the climber who had been diagnosed with and treated for pneumonia
last Friday had returned to Kathmandu in good health. Dr. Macedonia
also updated the Yale team as to the expedition's schedule. The
final morning rounds will be conducted on May 21st from the Italian
Research Center in Lobuche. Dr. Javier Davila, E3's Chief Medical
Researcher, added that data collection continues to be performed
at base camp.
Finally, Dr. Macedonia shared the team's plans for the educational
sessions that are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evenings. The
audience will be treated to a "live" link with the E3 team at
base camp, at which time the clinical and research activities
which use the most advanced telemedicine technology will be demonstrated.
In addition, viewers will have the opportunity to participate
in a question and answer session with E3 team members.
All of us are looking forward to 2 exciting programs.
