Description of Lecture: This is a debate between two upper level surgery residents. The debate is whether or not early debridement is indicated for non-infected pancreatic necrosis with evidence of organ failure.
Target Audience: This lecture is targeted for surgery faculty, residents, and students, as well
as any medical or allied health professional having an interest in new developments, new techniques, and
current research in the field of surgery.
Learning Objectives:
Position 1: Attendees will be able to identify and describe the Ranson's criteria and Apache II system as well as radiologic evaluation in the differentiation of edematous vs. necrotizing pancreatitis. Learners will be able to explain the indication for surgical intervention in the setting of necrotizing pancreatitis and the various surgical modalities available in the treatment of necrotizing pancreatitis.
Position 2: Attendees will be able to explain that surgical debridement of sterile pancreatic necrosis has not been shown to ameliorate coexisting organ failure and significantly increases the risk of secondary infection of sterile necrotic pancreas, as well as be able to explain how surgically induced secondary infection of sterile necrotic pancreas significantly increases mortality.
Description of Media: Media consist of approximately 45-60 minutes of digital audio and video captured from
the live event and streamed using Realmedia, accompanied by the audiovisual materials from the live
event. An evaluation questionnaire, a post-test consisting of 5 questions, and an opportunity to post questions to the presentor are included.
